Internet appliances—devices designed for easy Internet access and navigation—are all the rage. And hardware developers are bending over backwards to create low-cost, one-stop solutions for folks who want the Net with no strings attached. Mysmart.com is the latest entrant in this race, offering consumers a solution with a twist.

Unlike Compaq, Honeywell, Microsoft, and Qubit, whose appliances are designed as PC alternatives, the Mysmart system plays off the lowly yet ubiquitous mouse pad. The four-component smart mouse pad uses a combination of nine ready- to-program buttons, an online programming assistant, smart-card technology, and low-cost ISP service to transform what looks like a mouse pad into a more flexible peripheral.

At the core of the Mysmart.com solution are a unique mouse pad and Mysmart key cards. About the size of a credit card, each smart card is embedded with memory chips that ensure secure access to the user's Internet preferences when it is inserted into the pad. Each card stores pertinent personal data, such as passwords, personal billing information, and so on. Among other applications, the smart cards can make switching computers easier, because information specific to your computer and identity can be stored on the cards.

Homes with one PC can benefit from the solution, because it facilitates swift system-state transitions between multiple users.
